Solid silver pendant with a brushed finish and a strong silver chain, displaying the Shangrak symbol of Tengri.

Gök Tengri is the first of the primordial sky deities in the folk religion of the central Asian steppes (the Eurasian equivalent to the prairie in North America), where the words Tengri and Sky were synonyms. Tengri was not considered a deity in the usual sense, but a personification of the natural world.

Tengrism is an all-encompassing system of belief that includes medicine, a reverence of nature, shamanism, animism, totemism and ancestor worship. It is associated with the nomadic and warrior way of life of Turkic and Mongol peoples in ancient times, and would have been the faith of Genghis Khan and his followers.

The main symbol illustrated on the pendant is the Shangrak, an equilateral cross in a circle, depicting a shaman’s drum and the roof opening of a yurt, through the sky can be seen.

Over the shangrak is engraved part of the seal from Genghis Khan’s grandson, Güyüg Khan's, letter to Pope Innocent IV, which reads "möngke ṭngri-yin küčündür", which translates to "Under the power of the eternal heaven".

The heavy solid sterling silver pendant measures 2.5 cm or one inch in diameter. Without its solid silver chain, it weighs around 12g.

All of my silver jewellery is made from solid Sterling Silver (silver with a purity of at least 92.5%). It does not contain any lead or other harmful materials.
